Week 4 - Data Analysis and Visualisation
This is the fourth week of Digital Practices.
This Week:
- Description:
- Reflection:
- Work to be done for next week:
I don’t believe I have done data analysis and visualization before and if I did it must have been very little. From the lecture, I can see how important data analysis and visualization is, especially when analyzing data for a specific topic or question such as kickstarter. It also gave me another idea for my dissertation (I am still making a list for this). I think a good question would be do reaction channels harm content creators? I can then use data analysis and visualization to help identify key data which may support the argument or argue against the idea of that. I think this is interesting and an important method to help answer any questions we have about digital media.
The lab task for this week is to build and analyse a dataset. I have used spreadsheets before, so this might be something that I am interested in. When creating a dataset we have to find out what variables there are, either categorical or numeric. So for example my question could be, is england’s form at the world cup bad because they haven’t been playing a lot of ODI cricket since the last world cup and then try to find out the amount of ODI cricket they played vs the amount they played between the previous world cup (barring ICC events). From looking at this I can see that England have played far fewer games between 2019-2023 compared to 2015-2019, which could be one factor to why they have not played as well in this world cup. I could further expand this by identifying how many no result games they have played or how many games they have won or lost in a specific country as that could be another factor for their performance. (They may perform better in England compared to India for example)
To add this to my portfolio website. I could also try and look for ways to further improve the dataset.
Overall Thoughts and Images:
I really enjoyed trying this out. I have used excel before but not that much. I do think this is a really good topic to cover, as if I did want to answer a question, I can make my own dataset or use others online and find ways to analyse this. Like I said, England may be struggling because of the lack of ODIs or they could be struggling since they don't play as great in the subcontinent. So there are a lot of factors that go into this. Here is an image of the dataset so far:
I did well enough to identify that England have played a lot less than before but if I wanted to go further than I can.
